Taylor Takes a Win and Two Runner-Up Finishes at the Big House
June 23, 2008 (Belvidere, IL) – Taylor Racing made the trek to Crandon to
compete at track that has been a major part of his thirty three year
career. Scott Taylor brought his crew and family to the Northwoods to
enjoy the camaraderie and friendships he has made throughout his career.
The 2008 season has the reigning WSORR PRO-2WD champion, contracted to run
another race series, but he still chose to compete at the “Big House.”
Crandon International Off-Road Raceway is the Indianapolis equivalent in
the off-road racing world.
Saturday Round Three
The #8 Skyjacker Suspensions BFGoodrich Tire Ford F-150 came out of
Potawatomi Turn One in fourth place behind fellow Skyjacker Suspensions
driver, Ross Hoek. After a short time behind Hoek he made his move and
headed towards second place Vandenhuevel. After four more laps, Scott
moved into second place. Unfortunately time ran out for Scott to make a
serious charge on the leader. At the checkered flag, Scott Taylor crossed
the Skyjacker Finish line in second place.
Overnight the Russ Wernimont and the crew made a slight gear change
looking for a better bite coming out of the corners.
Sunday Round Four
The start saw the #8 Skyjacker truck tuck in behind #99 Kevin Probst as
the two trucks headed down the Ford Trucks Skybox straightaway. On lap
three, Scott made a clean move and grabbed the lead. The rest of the way
was smooth sailing as Scott Taylor crossed the finish line in front of the
field.
“The gear change really helped coming out of the corners,” noted Scott
Taylor. “The truck really came around better than yesterday. Now we’ve got
to ready for Chairman’s Cup. The truck is in great shape. Let’s hope the
weather holds up.”
The weather didn’t hold up. Small rain showers came down sporadically all
afternoon. Then about an hour before the Chairman’s Cup, the rain came
down much heavier. The rain stopped just as the starting grids were set.
The race track was wet, muddy, slippery, let than ideal conditions of a
short course off-road race. Nevertheless the show went on.
The two wheel drive trucks were given a half lap head start, as the track
officials were hoping for a final lap showdown with the top PRO-2WD and
PRO-4x4 trucks. In reality the muddy track gave the four wheel drive
trucks a big advantage.
When the green flag fell, mud went everywhere. Immediately it became a
race of survival, as the driver that made the fewest mistakes would come
out on top. The two-wheel drive trucks were all over the place. Scott
Taylor and Mike Oberg battled it out for the top spot in the two wheel
drive division. The muddy conditions made driver visibility and truck
traction a valued commodity. Meanwhile the PRO-4x4 truck of Kent Brascho
raced mistake free as he worked his way through the entire field, taking
the win. Scott Taylor finished fifth overall and second in the two-wheel
drive division.
Afterwards Scott Taylor commented;
“The track conditions were a disaster. We probably have 800 pounds of mud
on the truck. I can’t recall racing in these conditions in a very long
while… The PRO-2WD races we really had to work for our finishes. Saturday
we were off on the gearing, but Sunday the truck was working better and we
got the win. The work Russ, Alan, and the crew put in paid off. The
conditions for the Cup race really made it a race of survival. The
BFGoodrich tires worked great all weekend no matter what the conditions.
All in all Crandon is still one of best places to race.”
